Gallstones are very common and many people never know they have them. The picture changes when symptoms appear. Pain in the upper right of the abdomen after fatty meals, repeated nausea, or episodes of yellowing of the skin should always be checked. If pain is severe, does not settle, or is accompanied by a fever, prompt review is important because it can point to an infection or blockage that needs treatment. Ultrasound is the usual first test. Where symptoms and imaging both point to gallstones, keyhole removal of the gallbladder is the most common treatment.
