Varicose Vein Treatment

Assessment and treatment of varicose and other venous conditions of the legs.

General information

Medically reviewed by Dr. Nehal Naseer, MBBS, FCPS (Surgery). Last updated October 9, 2026.

What this treatment involves

Varicose veins are enlarged, twisted veins that most often appear in the legs. Treatment depends on the severity of the veins and the symptoms they are causing. Options range from lifestyle advice and compression stockings through to surgical or minimally invasive vein procedures. An ultrasound scan is usually used to assess the veins, and the most appropriate approach depends on the findings and the symptoms involved.

How care is decided

Whether varicose vein treatment is the right option depends on the individual patient. A doctor will normally assess the condition, review any imaging or test results, and discuss the alternatives before recommending a treatment. Not every patient with a related condition needs this procedure.
