About this condition

A hernia occurs when part of the contents of the abdomen pushes through a weakness in the muscle wall. The most common types are inguinal (groin), umbilical (around the belly button), and incisional (at the site of a previous operation). Hernias often become more noticeable when standing, coughing, or lifting. Not every hernia needs immediate surgery, but a swelling that is painful, growing, or cannot be pushed back should be reviewed promptly.

When to seek review

Persistent, worsening, or severe symptoms should always be reviewed by a doctor. If in doubt, contact the hospital or arrange an appointment with the relevant department.
