About this condition

Kidney stones form when certain minerals in the urine become concentrated. Small stones may pass on their own, but larger stones can block the flow of urine and cause severe pain in the back or side, often with nausea. Blood in the urine or a fever alongside pain should be assessed urgently. Treatment depends on the size and position of the stone.

When to seek review

Persistent, worsening, or severe symptoms should always be reviewed by a doctor. If in doubt, contact the hospital or arrange an appointment with the relevant department.
